Yoga

All of our yoga classes at Sunrise are really hatha yoga classes in that they try to unite body, mind and spirit using postures (asanas), breath work (pranayama) and some form of meditation and relaxation. However a hatha yoga class can vary from a very calming and gentle restorative class to an invigorating vinyasa flow class.

Have a look at the levels page for a description of each and if you're not sure which class to attend, just let us know and we'll advise you.

On one end of the scale is restorative yoga. These classes are very calming and suitable for everyone. You can read more about this under the restorative yoga heading.

The other end of the scale is vinyasa flow yoga. Derived from Ashtanga yoga, vinyasa flow is a powerful, energetic form of yoga in which a series of postures are linked dynamically by the breath. The practice builds heat in the body, detoxifying and purifying the entire system while strengthening, toning and enhancing flexibility.

Vinyasa flow classes don't follow the same strict sequence of postures as Ashtanga and instead the teacher will creatively vary the postures from class to class. These classes will appeal to those looking for an energetic practice but who enjoy a creative flow. Vinyasa flow isn't suitable for someone who has never done yoga but once you are comfortable with level 1 hatha yoga, you're ready to give it a go.

Our hatha and hatha flow classes fall somewhere between restorative yoga and vinyasa flow.

Hatha Flow Foundations is the ideal place for people to start. These classes are also great for people who want to go recap on details of certain aspects of Hatha flow.

Level 1 Hatha classes move at a pace that allows you to stretch deeply and align your body with your breath, so they also appeal to people who enjoy a slower or more gentle practice.

Our Hatha Flow classes are all level 2 and we move smoothly from posture to posture in rhythm with the breath. This is predominantly the style that we teach at Sunrise. It tends to be more energetic than some hatha classes, though not as stenuous as a vinyasa flow class.
